2.3% ; , and stillbirth 0.3% ; in our study population were within the ranges reported in the literature.31 The rate of failed medical abortion, defined as medical abortion followed by a surgical procedure 6.9% in our Danish study population ; , is also consistent with the rates in previous clinical trials32 and in a hospital-based study in Denmark.9 These observations support the validity of our data. Our nationwide cohort study provides evidence that medical abortion is at least as safe as surgical abortion with respect to the risks of ectopic pregnancy, spontaneous abortion, low birth weight, and preterm birth in the first subsequent pregnancy.

That the inactivated penicillin given orally or by injection decreased the number of clostridia in fecal material. Ap parently all of tbe antibiotic activity of the penicillin was not destroyed, although detection was not possible by stand ard penicillin assays cup plate and disc technic methods ; . It should be pointed out that 1 pg of procaine penicillin, aureomycin, or bacitracin per milliliter of inoculated medium in hibited the growth of isolated clostridia in vitro, whereas the addition of 1, 000 pg per milliliter of inactivated penicillin failed to produce such an inhibition. It is possible that the inactivated penicillin might have been reactivated within the body of the bird and excreted into the digestive tract, after which an effect on the clostridia was produced. It is possible also that a fragment of the penicillin molecule might have inhibited the clostridia in the gastrointestinal tract. Further data on the derivatives of penicillin are given in the second experiment described below. Attention is directed to the fact that the addition of dried whey to the basal diet table 1 ; produced a decrease in the number of clostridia per gram of fecal material, although the decrease was not statistically significant. A definite decrease in the number of clostridia was produced by the feeding of antibiotics in the presence of 3% dried whey. The data of this test are considered to be of particular significance, since a close relationship has been shown to exist between the administration of an antibiotic, the reduction of the number of clostridia per gram of feces, and an accelerated growth rate. Such an observation is in agreement with the earlier report of Sieburth et al. '51 ; , where the inhibition of Clostridium perfringeng was given as an explanation for the growth-promoting effect of penicillin and terramycin. At tention is also directed to the paper of Kiser et al. '52 ; , in which it was reported that a number of clostridia were de stroyed by the addition of aureomycin, penicillin or terra mycin to the medium.

A comparative study with dog livers also showed that HTK was not efficacious. No dogs survived after liver transplantation with a 48-hour preservation time with HTK.All dogs receiving a liver preserved with UW for 48 hours survived. Three studies further support the superiority of UW in comparison with HTK when the cold ischemic time CIT ; exceeds 24 hours. In a retrospective analysis of 323 cadaveric kidney transplantation, there was no significant difference in delayed graft function in those kidneys preserved for less than 24 hours. However, when CIT exceeded 24 hours, the delayed graft function rates for UW-preserved kidneys were 23.9% versus 50% with HTK-preserved kidneys 0.006 ; . Furthermore, graft survival at one year was 91% in those patients receiving UW-preserved kidneys compared with 77.4% for HTK 0.059 ; . In a small study of 12 non-heart-beating canine kidneys, after two weeks four of the six UW preserved kidney recipients survived and only one of six in the HTK group survived. This study also examined total adenine nucleotide TAN ; levels, showing that higher TAN levels indicate better preservation of energy metabolism, enhanced protection against the deleterious effects of warm!
Least 16, 000 people died and more than 500, 000 people were left with permanent health effects after the Union Carbide disaster. A November 1999 investigative report by Greenpeace revealed Union Carbide has abandoned several hundred tons of toxic materials including pesticide wastes and mercury contaminated sludges, in the factory. Greenpeace found that the factory site was extensively contaminated with persistent chlorinated poisons, including hexachlorocyclohexane HCH ; and chlorobenzenes and heavy metals. Some sites within the factory have mercury levels up to six million times in excess of background levels. More than 20 tons of HCH in sacks and over 20 tons of Sevin a carbamate pesticide ; in open drums were left in the open. The ground water used by the communities of gas victims living around the factory site is dangerously polluted with toxic chemicals such as chloroform and carbon tetrachloride. Toxic wastes found inside the factory were produced by Union Carbide before the 1984 gas disaster. Novartis makes Ritalin and is also the manufacturer of diazinon an organophosphate pesticide ; and many other "registered" pesticide poisons. It is well known that some pesticides, especially organophosphate pesticides, can cause neurological disorders they are neurotoxins ; . Novartis also sold genetically engineered seed, but refused to use the grains it produced in at least some of the foods they also produced, e.g., Gerber Baby Foods. Dow Buys Rohm and Hass Ag-Chem Business--Dow AgroSciences LLC will purchase the Rohm and Hass Company's agricultural chemicals busines for approximately billion. Under the agreement announced last month, dow will acquire the chemical business's insecticides, other product lines, trademarks, and license to all agricultural uses of its biotechnology assets. The transaction is expected to close in the second quarter of 2001, subject to regulatory approvals. Source: Dow AgroSciences, : dowagro . April 2001 EAS Newsletter Top Seven Agrochemical Companies in 2000 - PANUPS noted on May 23, 2001: Corporate consolidation continues to reduce the number of agrochemical crop biotechnology companies. In 2000, there were only seven companies with sales of more than US billion dollars. In comparison, 11 companies had sales above the US billion mark in 1995. These included Ciba Geigy, Sandoz, AgrEvo, RhonePoulenc and Cyanamid, none of which now exist due to corporate mergers. Syngenta, formed by a merger of Novartis and Zeneca in November, topped the list with sales approaching US billion. The German multinational corporation BASF saw a 39% increase in sales, the largest increase of the top seven but due almost entirely to the acquisition of Cyanamid. Monsanto and Bayer were the only two other corporations showing increased sales in 2000, at 8% and 13% respectively. Monsanto's increase was due primarily to sales of Roundup glyphosate ; , which accounted for 67% of Monsanto's total sales. Volumes of Roundup sold increased 20% in the U.S. and Argentina, and 16% worldwide -- due to higher sales of Roundup Ready glyphosate tolerant ; crops and glyphosate-based no-till farming practices. According to Monsanto, Roundup Ready soy planted in the U.S. rose by 12%, making up 60% of total U.S. soybean acreage. In Argentina, plantings of Roundup Ready soy increased by 3%, with 90% of the soy in that country now genetically engineered to be glyphosate tolerant. Roundup Ready corn is currently grown on three million acres, but Monsanto sees the potential global market at 200 million acres. Aventis CropScience had virtually no increase in sales in 2000. While sales for Aventis were up in Brazil and the U.S., these gains were offset by low sales in the Asia Pacific region and in Europe. Aventis was also forced to pay more than US million to cover some of the costs of the StarLink crop buy back last year. Genetically engineered StarLink corn was approved in the U.S. only for use as animal feed; however, the corn was found in corn supplies and products for human consumption. Company officials have admitted that the final amount could be several times higher than that paid in 2000. In April 2001, Aventis announced that it would sell off its CropScience division rather than seeking a separate stock market listing. The company has sent a sale proposal to Monsanto, DuPont and Dow, and to two German firms -- Bayer and BASF. In Fields of Poison, California Farmworkers and Pesticides, 1999 Pesticide Action Network noted: "Between 1991 and 1996 California's Department of Pesticide Regulation DPR ; reported nearly 4000 cases of agricultural pesticide poisoning. Approximately 44% of those cases were caused by drift. Yet, at the time of this writing October 2001 ; the DPR has constantly refused to allow the use of safe and far more effective alternatives and belladonna.

6.3.2 Solution areas and trade-offs among objective functions The maximum values of each single objective in Table 6.5 defined the outer boundaries of the solution areas. In subsequent iterations, the solution area for each household category was established by optimising maize production and progressively tightening restrictions for N-balance and manure production in steps of 1 unit. The results are given in Figure 6.1, where the N-balance x-axis ; and manure production y-axis ; are connected by labelled iso-maize production lines z-coordinate ; . The solution areas for the three household categories have the same shape but the opportunities, as defined by the size of the solution areas are higher for the resourcerich household and less for the resource-poor-household. Due to similarities in shapes, Figure 6.1 is explained using results of the resource-rich household Figure 6.1 A ; , but the same reasoning is applicable to Figure 6 B and 6 C. The value at each point in the solution area represents a unique combination of the three objective variables. Numbers 1, 2 and 3 in Figure 6.1 correspond to optimisation numbers in Table 6.5. The area at the right of the broken line connecting points 1 and 3, represents the efficient or "Pareto" optimal solutions such that an increase in the value of one of the objectives is achieved by degrading the value of other objectives. The rest of the areas in the figure represent the non-Pareto optimal solutions. Operating in the Pareto optimal solution area means that overall each kg of increase in manure production leads to a decrease in 0.9 kg of maize. Also, each 25 kg of produced manure leads to 1 kg decline in N-balance. Restricting the N-balance to a minimum of -10 kg N, the maize production in the Pareto optimal solution area at point a, is 1230 kg below that at optimum maize production point 2 ; whereas the manure is 1500 kg above that obtained in Optimisation 2. Consequently, the N-balance at this rate of manure production is 45 kg less that with Optimisation 2. In general, maximisation of manure production conflicts with maize production and N-balances, and vice versa. However, there seems to be little conflict between maize production and N-balances. Reducing manure production to 1250 kg raises maize production to 3200 kg point b ; . However, a further reduction in manure production to levels below that obtained at maximum maize production e.g. to 350 kg, result in a concomitant reduction in maize yield to 1200 kg, whereas nothing is gained in the N-balance point c ; . Analyses along the horizontal lines, which show a constant manure production and increasingly tighter restrictions on N-balances, indicate that within the non-Pareto. GENERAL PRINCIPLE Airway and Oxygen A. An intact airway and adequate oxygenation is essential for all patients with medical or traumatic illnesses. Throughout this treatment protocol it is assumed that the Out-of-Hospital emergency care provider will maintain a patent airway and provide appropriate supplemental oxygenation. 1. Adequate ventilations are defined as: a. rate of 10-30 b. absence of shallow or labored effort c. clear lung sounds d. no or very little signs of distress 2. Inadequate ventilations are defined as: a. rate 10 or 30 rate between 10-30 in the presence of: shallow labored respirations OR wheezes, wet sounds crackles [rales] or bubbles ; OR blue, gray or mottled skin B. Establish and maintain a secure airway ventilation 1. If ventilating adequately: nasal O2, 2-6 L min. or Non-Rebreather Mask NRB mask ; at 10-15 L min 2. Maintain patent upper airway with jaw thrust, nasopharyngeal and or oropharyngeal airway 3. If not ventilating adequately: Assist with BVM and 100% O2. 4. If vital signs have not improved after initial oxygen, re-evaluate oxygen delivery and adjust accordingly. 5. If pulse oximetry is used, adjust oxygen delivery devices to an oxygen saturation of 90% or above goal is 100% ; if possible. 6. In case of cervical compromise, consider alternative techniques including use of lighted stylet, multi-lumen airway, or trauma ET intubation. 7. Rapid Sequence Intubation RSI ; , Needle cricothyrotomy, and surgical cricothyrotomy are advanced alternative techniques for airway management that require specialized training and authorization by the service program medical director. Table1. In vitro activity of caspofungin against 106 yeast isolates and benzphetamine. 3.36 Originally in Phase 1 the Committee investigated individual complaints of abuse. That is to say, it held hearings at which the complainant made the allegation of abuse, which was answered by the person said to have committed the abuse, and any other person or body against whom an adverse finding might be made, such as the institution where the alleged abuse took place collectively referred to as `the respondents' ; . These hearings were held in private.59 However, subject to the finalisation of the Framework of Procedures, it is now envisaged that the business of the Committee will be reorganised on a modular basis in relation to institutions under investigation. In other words, there will be one inquiry unit or module in respect of each institution and what happened in that institution. However, a module may be sub-divided if appropriate, for example by reference to the period of responsibility of a particular manager of an industrial school. The result may be that an individual complainant will be involved in more than one module. In order to conduct its business more efficaciously, the Investigation Committee will operate in four divisions and separate modules will be assigned to each division.60 Hence the need to amend the 2000 Act to provide for Deciding Officers, referred to at paragraphs 3.27 - 3.28 ; . 3.37 The format is that at least six weeks before the date set for the evidential hearings ie where the substantive complaints are heard ; , both the complainant and each respondent will be served with Books of Documents A, B, C, and D ; for use at the hearings, containing the report of the inquiry officer and the accompanying documents.61 At least three weeks in advance, a preliminary hearing will be held in.

Direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription drugs DTCA ; is prohibited in Canada, as in most industrialized countries. Only two countries allow such advertising: New Zealand and the United States. However, three major consultations on the possibility of introducing DTCA have been held in Canada since 1996. Although no new legislation has been introduced, important shifts in the interpretation of the law have occurred, contributing to an increasing volume of made-in-Canada advertising. Additionally, population exposure to prescription drug advertising in US media has grown enormously since 1997, when a shift in US regulatory policy facilitated broadcast DTCA. There are two main types of medicines for sale in Canada: those that require a prescription and those that do not. The latter are known as over-the-counter drugs. Over-the-counter drugs are generally relatively safe and are for conditions that do not require a physician's diagnosis. Other medicines have prescription-only status because a physician's assistance is considered necessary for safe and appropriate use. This may be due to the complex nature of the diagnosis or because of the medicine's potential toxicity. The restriction on advertising in Canada is linked to this restriction on sales: manufacturers may advertise prescription-only products to health professionals but not to the general public. The physician is considered a "learned intermediary" and is legally responsible both for the prescribing decision and for warning patients about potential risks. An ongoing legal question in the US has been whether DTCA affects the learned intermediary doctrine. In other words, when manufacturers advertise directly to the public, have they transformed the patient-doctor role to the extent that they also become legally responsible to warn consumers directly?1 Do the safety concerns that originally led to restrictions on prescription drug advertising remain justified, or are they an anomaly in the 21st century, given our current educational levels, attitudes towards the use of health care services and the doctor-patient relationship, and access to a broad range of communication media? Direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription drugs is highly controversial, with many competing claims made about potential benefits and harms. Merck's global withdrawal of the arthritis drug rofecoxib Vioxx ; in September 2004 has prompted much media discussion of the effects of DTCA on public safety. Merck had spent more than US 0 million advertising Vioxx to the US public in its five years on the market. In 2000, consumerdirected advertising spending for Vioxx surpassed spending for Pepsi-Cola.2 US cardiologist Eric Topol argued in the New England Journal of Medicine that by not stopping Merck from advertising Vioxx to the US public while evidence of cardiac risks grew, the Food and Drug Administration FDA ; had failed in its duty to protect public health.3 Just weeks earlier, Peter Wold-Olsen, President of Merck's Europe, Middle East and Africa Human Health Division, was quoted in Scrip pharmaceutical bulletin arguing that many Europeans were suffering or dying needlessly due to "patient information deprivation syndrome" of epidemic proportions caused by the European ban on DTCA.4 and betaseron.

Showed low antibiotic activity when it was assayed. The antibiotic activity approximated that of bacitracin C. In a later contribution' it will be shown that, if bacitracin A is permitted to stand at room temperature for several days in a phosphate solution at pH 7 slightly above, it is converted partially to bacitracin C. In view of these results, we do not consider the phosphate system as suitable for precise characterization of bacitracin A. Bacitracin B appears not to be derived from A, since it contains an additional amino acid residue as shown by paper chromatography. The hope that our standard preparation of bacitracin A does approach a working degree of chemical purity has now been supported by extensive hydrolysis experiments and quantitative determination of the amino acid residues and by molecular weight studies with the partial substitution method of Battersby and Craig 11 ; . These results will be given in separate communications. The time would now appear ripe for reinvestigation of the problem of the supposed inherent toxicity of the antibiotic. Such studies are in progress. Absorption Spectrum Measurements-An aqueous solution of the standard preparation containing 1 mg, per ml. in water gave Curve 1 of Fig. 4. All measurements were made with the Beckman quartz spectrophotometer. A weak maximum is apparent in the region of 250 to 255 rnp. As experience with the material was gained, it soon became obvious that this characteristic absorption was caused by a chemically reactive arrangement of unknown linkages, since almost any transformation demonstrable by distribution characteristics, antibiotic activity, etc., resulted in the loss of the characteristic type of absorption. Thus if bacitracin A was dissolved in 0.1 M Na2C03 at a concentration of 1 mg. per ml. and the absorption measured immediately, the same curve was obtained as when water was the solvent. But on standing several days at 24", the absorption spectrum changed to that shown in Curve 2 of Fig. 4. A different type of shift was observed in acid solution. A solution of 1 mg. per ml. in 0.1 N HCl measured immediately did not differ from Curve 1. But on standing several days at 24", Curve 3 was obtained. The maximum was eliminated entirely. Bacitracin C, 1 mg. per ml. in water, gave Curve 4. Here the maximum is strikingly shifted to the region of 290 mp. Obviously the transformation which takes place in the more alkaline medium, such as in sodium carbonate, is different from that which produces bacitracin C. Bacitracin B gave a curve almost identical with A in water, but the shoulder was somewhat lower, as Curve 5 of Fig. 4 shows. The lower and baraclude. 3.3. Duodenal flow and urinary excretion of purine compounds Allantoin was the main urinary PD Tab. III ; accounting for about 0.92 of total PD excreted in the urine, whereas uric acid accounted for the remaining 0.08, with these proportions being independent of the experimental treatments. Urinary PD excretion was not affected by antibiotic supply although it was decreased with the high level of bacitracin supplementation P 0.05 ; . Duodenal flow of PB reflected those variations detected in urinary PD excretion. However, a higher dietary PB flow was detected in the rabbits fed bacitracin compared to those receiving the chlortetracycline diets because of numerical differences in DM intake between the diets 110.5 vs. 116.0 6.2 ; gday1, respectively ; . In the rabbit, as a caecotrophagic animal, duodenal purine bases come from two and betaxolol.
