Attention is directed to the fact that the addition of dried whey to the basal diet table 1 ; produced a decrease in the number of clostridia per gram of fecal material, although the decrease was not statistically significant. A definite decrease in the number of clostridia was produced by the feeding of antibiotics in the presence of 3% dried whey. The data of this test are considered to be of particular significance, since a close relationship has been shown to exist between the administration of an antibiotic, the reduction of the number of clostridia per gram of feces, and an accelerated growth rate. Such an observation is in agreement with the earlier report of Sieburth et al. '51 ; , where the inhibition of Clostridium perfringeng was given as an explanation for the growth-promoting effect of penicillin and terramycin. 6.3.2 Solution areas and trade-offs among objective functions The maximum values of each single objective in Table 6.5 defined the outer boundaries of the solution areas. In subsequent iterations, the solution area for each household category was established by optimising maize production and progressively tightening restrictions for N-balance and manure production in steps of 1 unit. The results are given in Figure 6.1, where the N-balance x-axis ; and manure production y-axis ; are connected by labelled iso-maize production lines z-coordinate ; . The solution areas for the three household categories have the same shape but the opportunities, as defined by the size of the solution areas are higher for the resourcerich household and less for the resource-poor-household. GENERAL PRINCIPLE Airway and Oxygen A. An intact airway and adequate oxygenation is essential for all patients with medical or traumatic illnesses. Throughout this treatment protocol it is assumed that the Out-of-Hospital emergency care provider will maintain a patent airway and provide appropriate supplemental oxygenation. 1. 3.36 Originally in Phase 1 the Committee investigated individual complaints of abuse. That is to say, it held hearings at which the complainant made the allegation of abuse, which was answered by the person said to have committed the abuse, and any other person or body against whom an adverse finding might be made, such as the institution where the alleged abuse took place collectively referred to as `the respondents' ; . Direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription drugs DTCA ; is prohibited in Canada, as in most industrialized countries. Only two countries allow such advertising: New Zealand and the United States. However, three major consultations on the possibility of introducing DTCA have been held in Canada since 1996. Although no new legislation has been introduced, important shifts in the interpretation of the law have occurred, contributing to an increasing volume of made-in-Canada advertising. Additionally, population exposure to prescription drug advertising in US media has grown enormously since 1997, when a shift in US regulatory policy facilitated broadcast DTCA. There are two main types of medicines for sale in Canada: those that require a prescription and those that do not. The latter are known as over-the-counter drugs. Over-the-counter drugs are generally relatively safe and are for conditions that do not require a physician's diagnosis. Other medicines have prescription-only status because a physician's assistance is considered necessary for safe and appropriate use. This may be due to the complex nature of the diagnosis or because of the medicine's potential toxicity. The restriction on advertising in Canada is linked to this restriction on sales: manufacturers may advertise prescription-only products to health professionals but not to the general public. The physician is considered a "learned intermediary" and is legally responsible both for the prescribing decision and for warning patients about potential risks. An ongoing legal question in the US has been whether DTCA affects the learned intermediary doctrine. In other words, when manufacturers advertise directly to the public, have they transformed the patient-doctor role to the extent that they also become legally responsible to warn consumers directly?1 Do the safety concerns that originally led to restrictions on prescription drug advertising remain justified, or are they an anomaly in the 21st century, given our current educational levels, attitudes towards the use of health care services and the doctor-patient relationship, and access to a broad range of communication media? Direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription drugs is highly controversial, with many competing claims made about potential benefits and harms. Merck's global withdrawal of the arthritis drug rofecoxib Vioxx ; in September 2004 has prompted much media discussion of the effects of DTCA on public safety. Merck had spent more than US 0 million advertising Vioxx to the US public in its five years on the market. In 2000, consumerdirected advertising spending for Vioxx surpassed spending for Pepsi-Cola.2 US cardiologist Eric Topol argued in the New England Journal of Medicine that by not stopping Merck from advertising Vioxx to the US public while evidence of cardiac risks grew, the Food and Drug Administration FDA ; had failed in its duty to protect public health.3 Just weeks earlier, Peter Wold-Olsen, President of Merck's Europe, Middle East and Africa Human Health Division, was quoted in Scrip pharmaceutical bulletin arguing that many Europeans were suffering or dying needlessly due to "patient information deprivation syndrome" of epidemic proportions caused by the European ban on DTCA.4 and betaseron.

In a later contribution' it will be shown that, if bacitracin A is permitted to stand at room temperature for several days in a phosphate solution at pH 7 slightly above, it is converted partially to bacitracin C. In view of these results, we do not consider the phosphate system as suitable for precise characterization of bacitracin A. Bacitracin B appears not to be derived from A, since it contains an additional amino acid residue as shown by paper chromatography. The hope that our standard preparation of bacitracin A does approach a working degree of chemical purity has now been supported by extensive hydrolysis experiments and quantitative determination of the amino acid residues and by molecular weight studies with the partial substitution method of Battersby and Craig 11 ; . These results will be given in separate communications. The time would now appear ripe for reinvestigation of the problem of the supposed inherent toxicity of the antibiotic. Such studies are in progress. Absorption Spectrum Measurements-An aqueous solution of the standard preparation containing 1 mg, per ml. in water gave Curve 1 of Fig. 4. All measurements were made with the Beckman quartz spectrophotometer. A weak maximum is apparent in the region of 250 to 255 rnp. As experience with the material was gained, it soon became obvious that this characteristic absorption was caused by a chemically reactive arrangement of unknown linkages, since almost any transformation demonstrable by distribution characteristics, antibiotic activity, etc., resulted in the loss of the characteristic type of absorption. Thus if bacitracin A was dissolved in 0.1 M Na2C03 at a concentration of 1 mg. per ml. and the absorption measured immediately, the same curve was obtained as when water was the solvent. But on standing several days at 24", the absorption spectrum changed to that shown in Curve 2 of Fig. 4. A different type of shift was observed in acid solution. A solution of 1 mg. per ml. in 0.1 N HCl measured immediately did not differ from Curve 1. But on standing several days at 24", Curve 3 was obtained. The maximum was eliminated entirely. Bacitracin C, 1 mg. per ml. in water, gave Curve 4. Here the maximum is strikingly shifted to the region of 290 mp. Obviously the transformation which takes place in the more alkaline medium, such as in sodium carbonate, is different from that which produces bacitracin C.
