Stock markets around the world rose during the 12-month review period. European equities produced the highest returns in euro terms, followed by markets in the Asia Pacific region and the UK; Japan, however, fared less well throughout much of the period. Indices worldwide fell in May 2006, as investors became concerned about rising interest rates and the consequent impact on both corporate earnings and economic growth. However, shares recovered subsequently amid strong corporate results, robust takeover activity and falling oil prices. In February 2007, global bourses experienced another decline, triggered by a downturn in Chinese stock prices, although most markets recovered to reach new highs in April, boosted by strong earnings figures and a significant number of mergers and acquisitions. During the period, the fund underperformed its benchmark, with the US content proving the most detrimental to returns. In particular, the American Growth Fund detracted, largely because of the weakness of holdings in airlines and semiconductor firms. In the Japanese portion of the portfolio, investments in the electrical machinery and services sectors hurt returns. Exposure to the UK also had a negative impact on relative returns. However, this was partially offset by asset allocation, notably a bias towards European equities, which performed well over the review period. The fund manager retained his overweight exposure to Continental European equities in view of the encouraging outlook for corporate profitability, as well as continuing merger and acquisition activity. Conversely, he maintained belowbenchmark exposure to the US. Financial concerns continue to focus on the US, and the manager believes that more attractive investment opportunities can be found elsewhere. At the end of the period, the fund was overweight Japan and the Asia Pacific economies. In Japan, the fund manager sought to benefit from the investment opportunity created by the market weakness surrounding the yen. The Asia Pacific region continues to benefit from strong domestic demand.

Tumor suppressor genes The p53 gene, probably the most famous tumor suppressor gene, couldn't be absent from the list of genes involved in gastric carcinogenesis. It is frequently inactivated in gastric carcinomas by loss of heterozygosity LOH ; , missense mutations or frameshift deletions. Taken together, these genetic alterations are present in more than 60% of gastric carcinomas and are also found in intestinal metaplasia, dysplasia and adenomas 69-71 ; . The p53 gene locus 17p13.1 ; frequently shows GC-AT transitions in diffuse-type gastric cancer, due to carcinogenic N-nitrosamines produced from dietary amines and nitrates in the acid gastric environment 72-74 ; . LOH and abnormal expression of the p73 gene, another p53 family member mapping at 1p36, a minimal region frequently mutated in gastric cancer, preferentially occur in the de novo pathway for well-differentiated adenocarcinomas of foveolar type expressing pS2 TFF1 ; , a gastric-specific trefoil factor 61, 75 ; . The pS2 protein is normally expressed in gastric foveolar epithelial cells. Inactivation of the pS2 gene is observed in dysplasia, adenoma and adenocarcinoma in mice 76 ; , suggesting its role at early steps of gastric carcinogenesis 61 ; . Germline mutations in the adenomatous polyposis coli APC ; gene cause familial adenomatous polyposis FAP ; , which is an autosomal-dominant colorectal cancer syndrome 77 ; . Loss of heterozygosity of the two closely spaced APC MCC genes, which are involved in colon tumorigenesis, has been also shown to be associated with the 20 and cladribine.

C52-05 Massimo CULTRARO Italy ; Geometric motions on vessel and hidden symmetries into community: a study of the painted pottery from EBA Sicily Italy ; in reconstructing patterns of social memory. ABSTRACT: The pottery group related to the Castelluccio Culture in the Early Bronze Age Sicily is of considerable importance in exploring the emergence of the painted decorative system in Central Mediterranean at the beginning of the Second Millennium BC. The appearance of the Dark on Light decorated pottery is much better documented than in other areas of the Mediterranean and, in the case of Sicily, the new decorative system represents a different visual and symbolic of aesthetic labour. This paper seeks to focus on the whole complex of decorative elements of the Castelluccio's painted pottery, which includes geometric designs and skeuomorphic figures. The alternating combination of the rigid geometry of figurative designs and linear motifs represents a practically and intellectually structured medium in reconstructing symbolic and ideological patterns. In this context, of particular interest is the appearance of more elaborated human schematic figures which have parallels in the decorated animal bones so-called "ossi a globuli" in Italian literature ; used in ritual purposes. The earliest introduction of multiple figures, in the scheme of "dancing ladies", is a basic constructional element in exploring the creative interchange between technical competences in terms of operational procedures familiar and knowledge transmitted over generations and between village groups ; , and their associated functions and meanings. C52-06 Emilia PASZTOR Szazhalombatta, Hungary ; The significance of the sun, moon and celestial bodies to societies in the Carpathian Basin during the Bronze Age. ABSTRACT: There is good evidence that solar and lunar phenomena played a particularly important role in mythology in Europe in the Bronze Age. During the Bronze Age the increasing use of special symbols assumed to be solar is well known and easily discernible on different types of archaeological artefacts. Essays on prehistoric mythology frequently mention the evident existence of lunar or especially solar cults.Yet they invariably repeat a well-known list of examples of artefacts and rock art from many different parts of Europe. The Bronze Age finds in the Carpathian Basin, in particular, have never been systematically examined with regard to these concepts. In the paper I study: the astral decorations on various objects from different social groups, what kind of relation do they bear to the other features of the artefacts material, colour, shape, purpose of use, role in the burial custom, position in grave.

The Ronneburg mining area near Gera Thuringia is known as Europe's most important uranium field. During the active mining period from 1951 to 1990 several underground mines and the Lichtenberg open-cast pit worked on uranium-bearing Ordovician, Silurian and Devonian slates and limestones. The slates are rich in pyrite and organic matter. At time the open-cast pit is filled with mine dump material. The investigations deal mainly with the formation of minerals in the oxidation zone and recently formed minerals on the dumps and in the open-cast pit. These minerals are a result of alteration and self ignition processes. The investigation of secondary minerals give information on the migration processes on the dumps and in open-cast pit. The mining was permanently complicated by spontaneous self-ignition of slates rich in organic matter and pyrite in the open-cast pit, in underground mines and on the dumps. The fires lead to the rise of gases like CO, CO2, SO2, H2S, H2Se, HCl, HBr, NH3 and MoO3. The elements Hg, As, Sb, Bi, Pb and I were also transported via a gas phase. Uranium is mobile as uranyl group in an aqueous solution. As a result of the mine fires the formation of minerals like sulfur, selenium, oldhamite, berndtite, jeromite, bazhenovite, sal ammoniac, coccinite, molybdite, huntite, bayleyite, ye'elimite, lyonsite and several sulfates were observed. Alteration processes on the dumps and in the open-cast pit leads to the formation of minerals with Mg, Fe, Al, K, Na, Ca, Cu and uranyl as cations and sulfate, carbonate, phosphate, vanadate and rarely also sulfite and arsenate as anions. The recent formation of sulfids is also known. As secondary minerals were found gysum, epsomite, rozenite, magnesiocopiapite, halotrichite, magnesium-zippeite, hannebachite, hummerite, zeunerite, covellite and several others. An interesting association containing the selenide, selenite, and vanadate minerals klockmannite, chlacomenite, clinochalco-menite, and volborthite was observed in the oxidation zone of the Lichtenberg open-cast pit

Abstract The consequences of a texture zero at the ee entry of neutrino mass matrix in the flavor basis, which also implies a vanishing effective Majorana mass for neutrinoless double beta decay, have been studied for Majorana neutrinos. The neutrino parameter space under this condition has been constrained in the light of all available neutrino data including the CHOOZ bound on s2 and clorazepate.
