Better understanding of the impact of research on policy and practice is needed. Clearly, making research `work' in policy and practice terms requires more than simple dissemination; it also requires active translation and clearer articulation of the implications of findings for policy and practice, and some shepherding by those in key positions to influence the implementation. The impact is also likely to be enhanced by coordinated multi-site projects and local replication of the findings using sound methodology and reliable measures. 2.6 Summary: Research gaps The main gaps in relation to out-of-home care research relate both to the content area and the type of research: There are no national research or evaluation projects and only one multi-site cross-state project. The lack of collaboration across states and agencies narrows the impact of any research findings, and increases the likelihood of duplication of research efforts. Just over half the projects use qualitative research methodology and half are based on small non-random samples, often in single agency services. Few studies replicate the findings from earlier research or from research in other jurisdictions.
