Wound-Healing Assay. Female 5- to 8-wk-old C57BL 6 or BALB c wt and Y2 mice were used for wound-healing studies. Lesions of the optic tract After the joining decussation of the optic nerves at the optic chiasma emerge the optic tracts. It follows that a lesion of the optic tract results in a homonymous hemianopia, which is incongruous because fibres from the two eyes do not run close together in this part of the visual pathway. Three other clinical features deserve mention here. Firstly, the optic tracts lie close to the cerebral peduncles in which upper motor neurones traverse ; so that associated mild contralateral pyramidal signs may coexist. Secondly, because the optic tracts carry pupillomotor fibres destined for the pretectal nucleus, a lesion of this nerve bundle also encompasses an afferent pupillary defect, whereby light shone into the unaffected side of the retina will produce a normal light reaction, but stimulation of the other half of the retina will show no response. In practice, this latter sign, the so-called Wernicke's pupil, is not easy to demonstrate. Thirdly, since the fibres in the optic tract are unsynapsed axons of retinal ganglion cells, a lesion of the tract causes optic atrophy. Having discussed the above, lesions of the optic tract are rare, and similar to those affecting the chiasma particularly a pre-fixed one ; . They include some types of pituitary tumours, craniopharyngiomas and suprasellar aneurysms4. d. Lesions of the optic radiations The optic radiations carry visual information from the lateral geniculate nucleus to the striate cortex. Further posteriorly, the fibres from corresponding parts of the two retinae lie progressively closer together. Because fibres in the optic radiations are second order neurones after ganglion cell axons have synapsed in the LGN ; , a lesion here does not produce optic atrophy. Since the inferior fibres of the optic radiations first sweep antero-inferiorly in Meyer's loop, a lesion of the optic radiations in the temporal lobe most commonly a glioma ; , will result in a superior quadrantanopia which is incongruous, but will also cause other symptoms due to involvement of the other neurones in the temporal lobe, e.g. olfactory or gustatory hallucinations and uncinate fits.
