The study was undertak en to evaluate the usefulness ofcobatt-57 57Co ; tipped biopsy needle in TNP of lesions which are either hot or cold when imaged with technetium- mTc ; labeled radionuclides. Co balt-57 decays by electron capture with a physical half-life of 270.9 days, mean energy of the abundant gamma radiation being 122.1 keV 85.5% ; . The first 5 mm of the tip of ten spinal needles were coated with 57Co and overtayed with a stable cobalt isotope. The activity at the tip ranged from 3.3 to 17.1 zCi. The needles were tested for firmness of adhesion by a simple wipe test and multiple sequential perforations of store purchased meat. The needles were imaged in both cold and hot nodules of a thyroid phantom filled with about 500 zCi of [ mTc1pertechnetate using a high resolution pinhole collimator. All needles were welt visualized in the cold nod ules at energy peaks of 122, 130, and 140 keV, with a window setting of 10%. The needle with I7.7 zCi of 57Coactivity at the tip could be detected in the hot nodule at energy peaks of I 33 and 120 keV, with a window setting of 10%.
